Specter

The Malaria Game

Specter is a game based on the challenges of fighting malaria in the developing world. The main objective is to foster understanding of the disease through the mechanics of play. The target audience is secondary-school students. The prototype is turn-based and designed for two players. One is the Doctor, representing health care workers, while the opposing player is the malaria-causing Plasmodium. The Doctor travels through the terrain-rich environment trying to prevent and cure malaria while Plasmodium infests the water bodies and breeds more mosquitoes. Interplay between the oppositional goals of the two competing forces fosters acquisition of knowledge on the causes of the disease and its transmission as well as strategies for prevention and treatment.
