Colleen Macklin

Director

Colleen Macklin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Design and Technology at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City and Director of PETLab (Prototyping Evaluation, Teaching and Learning lab), a joint project of Games for Change and Parsons, supported by funding from the MacArthur Foundation, focused on developing new games, simulations, and play experiences which encourage experimental learning and investigation into social and global issues. She has led social media projects and programs with partners such as the UN and Open Society Institute (OSI), including a design fieldwork program connecting Parsons students with OSI's Public Health programs in Africa and the former Soviet Union. In 2006-2007 Colleen was a fellow at the India China Institute at the New School investigating the use of mobile phones and location-based media in urban design with support from Nokia. In the days prior to the dot.com bubble, Colleen designed websites and interactive applications for clients such Citibank, France Telecom and Moet, and dj'ed and vj'ed at site-specific venues and for cultural institutions such as SoundLab, The Whiney Museum for American Art and Creative Time. Karen Sideman

Project Director

Karen Sideman is Director of Projects for Games For Change. In that capacity she helps run PETLab, a collaborative enterprise undertaken by G4C and Parsons the New School for Design to stimulate research and prototype activity for games in the social interest. She is a long-time interactive designer - she worked at both Edwin Schlossberg, Inc and R|GA Interactive during the 90's - who realized early that game design provided the most rigorous expression of the field's potential. As Creative Director of Sesame Workshop Online, she lead the team that built Sesame Street's first large scale web presence. She continues to explore the possiblities of educational play working with Sally Ride Science on inspirational and informative products for middle school girls interested in science, math and technology. Whenever she has extra time she helps make edgy casual games at This Is Pop.

David Carroll

Research Faculty

Assistant Professor, Design & Technology. Served as Multimedia Director at Second Thought, a small interactive boutique firm supplying creativity and interactive products to media clients including CNN, SI, NICK, PBS, ESPN, AETN, AOL, Nintendo and others. Previous work includes directing a team of multimedia designers at thoughtbubble productions, designing and developing interactive work for the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum, HBO, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures and others. Specializes in interactive media technology including commercial, academic and artistic contexts for both desktop and mobile environments. MFA, Design & Technology, Parsons School of Design.

Kan Yan (Kyle) Li

Kyle is a game designer and game programmer with special interests in hardware engineering and computer video game history. He knows games are educational from the very beginning, he just needs to prove it and he is in a good place to do it.

Louisa Campbell

Research Faculty

Writer, creative director, and media manager for both new and traditional media. Authored over 50 books for children and writes for television, the stage, and interactive media projects. Currently directing the redesign of YouthNoise.org, a San Fransico-based non-profit that provides a digital hub for teen and college students active in movements for social, political and environmental change, to increase community and interactivity through game play. Has taught in the MFA D+T program since 2000 and has worked for many brands including Jim Henson, Sesame Workshop, Viacom, Disney and MaMaMedia. Graduated from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges.

Michie Pagulayan

Michie Pagulayan is an Assistant Professor at Parsons Communication Design and Technology Department--wearing many hats, including producing and coordinating various significant research initiatives within the CDT department. With over a decade of advertising and marketing experience, Michie worked in such companies as: HealthRamp, Inc., Edward Walter Design, Ammirati Puris Lintas, Taipan Bozell, and Guess Footwear. Mike Edwards

Research Faculty

Mike Edwards is a recent graduate of the Parsons Communication Design and Technology department, receiving his Masters of Fine Arts in Design and Technology. A web programmer by trade, he came to Parsons to explore the meeting place of people and their machines. He has become a instructor in the process, teaching his students to bring new technical ideas into their creative practice. His thesis sent him to Malawi, twice, working to improve medical measurements used to treat malnourished children. He also creates hardware devices and games in the educational and social interest. He has burned, shocked, scraped, bruised, and humiliated himself enough times to have learned many useful things.
